Clinical Review of 154 Cases of Acute Pancreatitis



Abstract
During the period of 3 years and 3 months from June, 1968 to July, 1971, clinical reviewed 154
cases of acute pancreatitis in Sacred Heart Hospital.
The 154 patients were analyzed the medical records of the patients to observe distribution of medical
section, incidence, predisposing factors, duration of sign and symptoms, cardinal sign and symptoms,
initial site of pains and etc.
Serum amylase level were observed on differnt stages of illness which related improvement with
early treatment of the disease and other labarotory findings were so on.
The female were affected 1.05 times more than males among the 154 cases. The youngest patient
was 5 years old and oldest one was 81 years age. Most cases occured in the age group of 30¡­39
years and 40¡­49 years.
Most frequent predisposing factor was unknown etiology and the next was biliary diseases. Average
duration from onset of disease to admission was within 3 days of most cases.
Abdominal pain with 100% was cardinal symptom which sites for the appearance of initial pain
were related in the sequence of epigastrium with 56%, right hypochondrium with 16%, left hypoch
ondrium with 13% and generalized abdominal pain with 4%.
The most frequent site of radiating pain was the back with 40.8%, both shoulder and scapula with
22.5%, back and shoulder with 36.7%.
Increased mortality rate related lower serum calcium level with below 9§·% in 26.4%.
Average findings can be seen on chest p.a. with 8.4% and flat abdomen was in 51.3%.
The 145 cases were treated conservative manner and 9 cases had surgical procedures.
The 154 cases are reported and the literature is reviewed.
